Thoughts on Building Healthy Churches

We had our monthly Mission Mid-Atlantic staff meeting today and some of our time was devoted to preparations for the upcoming Annual Conference in April. (To learn more visit our Web Site at http://www.missionmid-atlantic.org/).

Each of us will write a brief annual report for our area of oversight, so it’s time to begin reflecting on the past year when, for the first time, Mission Mid-Atlantic devoted dedicated resources to the function of Building Healthy Churches.

What an eye-opening experience it has been. We’ve been able to organize some basic services, from pastoral coaching to church health consults, ministry evaluation and leadership training, and a number of Mission Mid-Atlantic churches have already participated and, hopefully, benefitted from these new additions to MMA’s offerings. However, the amazing thing to me is how unique each consulting assignment is and how God chooses to show up, sometimes in ways expected, more often in ways surprising. It seems every time a church or a pastor chooses to be vulnerable to a sober evaluation of their ministry and truly open to God-directed change, the One Who promised to build His church shows up big-time. And when He does, it’s exciting and – can I say it – scary.

I’ll write more about that in my annual report, but for now, I feel like the kids in Narnia asking if Aslan is safe. “Safe? said Mr. Beaver... Who said anything about safe? Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”

Know what I mean?
