Church Safety and Security Audits

In light of the Colorado shootings, churches must conduct periodic safety and security audits. Here are ten basic questions to consider in a safety and security audit:

•Do we know how to conduct a thorough investigation when a critical incident takes place?
•How are we handling safety and security issues for our preschool and day care programs?
•Are we prepared for a quick response to medical emergencies?
•What are we doing to prevent and deal with issues pertaining to child abuse?
•What are the legally mandated responsibilities of church staff members?
•Do we have security/surveillance cameras and are they being used effectively?
•Do we have trained church security personnel to monitor our facilities?
•Are we taking measures to prevent intruders and how do we handle an intrusion of our facilities?
•Do we know rapid response procedures to follow when a violent act occurs?
•Are we following through with background checks on all paid staff and volunteers?
