I met this morning with the Elders of Davisville Church as they began their Elders Retreat in Ocean City, NJ. (http://www.davisville.org/) I shared some thoughts on vision based on 1 John 1.5-7, and I used the human eye as an illustration.
One of the things I pointed out was that every one of us has a blind spot where the optic nerve connects with the eye. This is also a reality in our personal and spiritual lives. Every Christian leader needs to remember that there are things that others see in our lives to which we ourselves are blind.
This prompted several questions.
1. Where are the blind spots in our ministry? What are we missing?
2. How do we learn about the blind spots? If we are blind to them, we need to be open to others pointing them out to us.
3. Who do I allow to point out my personal blind spots? This news is often hard to swallow, but this is the only way we may learn these things.
The Elders didn't come up with any answers by the time I left. However, these are some great questions for leaders of every church to contemplate. Let me know your thoughts.
