Relational Verification

I have a reasonable expectation when I make an on-line purchase that a system is in place to protect the transaction. Products like VeriSign by Symantec are designed to protect customers from identity theft. The VeriSign symbol on a website tells me that my transaction is safe because of their on-line security. Shouldn't I be just as diligent to practice relational verification? Relational verification means that I confirm a fact prior to passing that information on to others. Relational verification also means that I should gather all of the facts before reaching a conclusion so that I don't jump to conclusions. I don't make an on-line purchase before making sure it is safe and verified. I need to be just as diligent to practice relational verification.
